Interview with Jared

Solaris
Gail Z. Martin, author of The Summoner and the upcoming sequel, The Blood King, thought it would be fun to interview one of her characters instead of her. Solaris Books has an exclusive interview with King Jared of Margolan — you won’t find this anywhere but here!

You’ve taken over Margolan, you’ve been pretty unpopular. Why do you think that is? What would you say to those who question your abilities?
You’re listening to fools who don’t have a vision for the kingdom. Margolan will be returned to its ancient glory, when it was led by warrior kings who took what they wanted, kings who knew what it was to be a true king. Bricen was weak. He was soft. I am not afraid of the power of the crown.

People have suggested that your relationship between you and your mage, Arontala, is strained. Is there any truth in these rumours?

I expected a mage who could produce results. All I’ve gotten are promises. Promises won’t secure the throne. Promises are worthless—only power matters in the end.

How difficult is it to actually be a king? Surely the luxurious lifestyle is appealing?
The kings of old understood what it meant to be a king. They won their crown in battle and they proved their kingship in battle. Margolan is in a new battle, with enemies that would destroy us all. We are surrounded by traitors, undermined by vayash moru, and challenged by those who doubt Margolan’s power. Luxuries are for weak kings like Bricen. Strong kings seize their destiny and take what is rightfully theirs. Margolan will regain its rightful place, as the dominant power in the Winter Kingdoms, and I will show them all what it means to be a true king.

It would be fair to say you’re not fond of your brother. Of course, sibling relationships are strained, but why do you hate him so much?
My half-brother, Tris, is a coward and a liar. He turned Bricen against me. Now he’s got Staden of Principality eating out of his hand, believing his lies. He’s a boy who wants to play king. What does he know of hardship? He had a mother. What does he know of making his own way? Bricen cleared the path for him. He’s soft. No one made my way for me. No one coddled me. I learned early to take what was mine because no one was going to give it to me. That’s what a king needs to know—how to seize and keep what is rightfully his.

Knowing some of the powers Foor Arontala truly possesses as both a vayash moru and a blood mage, are you starting to regret your partnership with him now that he seems to have priorities on his mind that don't coincide with yours?
We will rule the Winter Kingdoms as they were meant to be ruled—by a strong king and an invincible sorcerer. I’m not afraid of anyone—certainly not Arontala. Anyone who doubts us will regret it. There are no “other priorities.” All is proceeding according to plan.

Finally, how do you like to unwind in the evening? A man with an important position must find good ways to relax...
I’m partial to Cartelasian brandy. And I enjoy the company of the ladies. Yes, I do enjoy the ladies…
